"Campfire Tales" Review

And now that the book commentary is out of the way, let’s get on to the business of ponies.  This is my reaction to “Campfire Tales”.

* I see Rarity decided to rough it this time.

* ...And then the show decides to bring up that exact point.  Even used the phrase “roughing it”.

* Well on a different topic we know at least one year has passed in this series if this is an annual thing.

* How did Fluttershy manage to fit into a Scootaloo costume?  Seriously though, when did Scoots become paranoid of the outdoors?  I thought it was the ghost stories that freaked her out last time, not the woods in and of themselves.

* Though to be fair, I’d be ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED by flying spiders too.  These things existing is evidence that we are cursed by Celestia!

* Oh dear alicorns, they bite too?!  Surely this is a new level of Tartarus.  It’s official, flyders = EVIL

* Oh hey, panic has led Sweetie to discover barrier magic.  That or Twilight decided to give the fillies a little combat training.

* Unicorn horns are bite-able?  I tohught horns were usually made of dense nail or hair stuff, something like that?  I suppose they might have a thin, hairy membrane over them, which would also explain why they match the colors of their coats, that will bleed a bit if damaged.  Maybe.  Look, I ain’t a biologist.

* OK, now Scootaloo being nervous at them wanting to tell tales again to pass the time is something I can understand.

* So, “Rockhoof” is up first then.

* Viking ponies?

* Aww... they cut out the bite marks while the story was being told.

* Puberty powers, activate!

* Good luck getting those three suitcases back, Rarity.

* Huh, apparently there’s gold is these hills.

* Return of Twilarina?

* I’m pretty sure the answer of how the most beautiful unicorn became a wrinkly old sorceress would be “time”.

* Anyway, the legend of Mist Mane is next.

* Huh, East Asian setting this time.  And the unicorn horns are noticeably more curved than the standard model we’ve had up until now.

* I’mma just assuming Rarity is using magic to create the shadow puppets, as I doubt her hooves are that malleable

* Actually, I’m pretty sure the first thing visiting ponies would notice is the squalid city around the palace.  Even other greedy, vain rulers generally know to have an upscale district and path to the palace grounds for a more effective illusion of prosperity.

* Nice magical avatar battle.  Like the effects.

* Ah, the old magic at the cost of youth trope.

* SCREAM

* Rainbow Dash, you stupid little... well, enjoy being trapped underground.  Scootaloo, if you survive this, find a new mentor.

* Yes, let us reignite the oxygen consuming fire.  I’m hoping there’s more to this cave than we’ve seen.

* Seriously, what is with Scootaloo this episode.

* Well, at least we got a brief glimpse of affection from Rainbow out of this.  Let’s get started on the last legend, Flash Magnus.

* Oh hai, Torch.

* Nice design on the magic shield, but it don’t look like it’d cover much.

* That didn’t really seem like Flash’s plan.

* Ah, there is a back tunnel.

* And then everypony made it out safe and sound.  The end.  Until the accursed flyders invade Ponyville.

Well that’s the episode.  I thought this one was fairly enjoyable.  Of the tales told my favorite was probably Mist Mane’s.  Still, one problem I have with the episode is that Scootaloo seemed to get a bit... infantilized in this one.  I get that she got scared last time and was more comfortable admitting to that now, but this just seemed out of character for her.  Like I joked about earlier, she seemed more like an early Fluttershy than a kid that was revealed to not like scary stories.  But overall not bad.
